I agree with you. Patriotism is something that the Republicans seem to think they have cornered the market on. Barack Obama is the epitome of patriotism in my mind given that he believes in Americans as well as America. He believes that ALL Americans should have a right to the American dream. He believes in helping us with healthcare, education and the like. A flag in the background denotes a patriotism and evokes that in many people.

The symbols of our country do indeed trigger an emotional patriotic response. As the Head-of-State, our President is the symbol of national unity, which Bush has failed to achieve. Senator Obama's platform is not about complaining about the Republican's policies; instead, he sends a message of "common sense" policies, not partisan politics. He symbolizes the national unity that Americans crave. In future ads please include patriotic iconography. Symbols such as the American Flag and Presidency represent the core values we Americans hold dear.

I disagree and here's why: The Republican party, as one writer stated, has often put the American flag in their ads. But the flag stands for all Americans, and it should not be used as a symbol for political gain. If you put the flag in 'because the Republicans have and we don't', you're putting it in because you want to gain politically. I sincerely hope Obama runs, AND wins the ticket and I'd vote for him in a heartbeat. But I also think his campaign should endeavor to stay away from the 'status quo' of the typical methods, including wrapping itself up in patriotic symbols, shortcuts, if you will, for the voting public. 'Vote for me because I represent such-and-such a platform/policy' is a logical, even noble, ideal. 'Vote for me because I include all the right 'buttons' in my ads' is disengenuous at best, and smacks of political pandering. My two cents, ymmv.

I agree. And, one thing everyone must remember about a person's voting record is the way that bills are brought about and finally passed. A bill almost never goes through on its own merits. People tack on stuff that has nothing to do with the bill itself. For instance, you may have a fabulous bill for healthcare that Obama would totally support but he might vote no on it because some knuckleheads have tacked on things that have to do with something that might be VERY detrimental to the American people, like a huge tax break for the wealthy. So, be careful when looking at Obama's record, or anyone else's record for that matter, to be sure that they didn't vote against the actual bill but perhaps against it based upon what the things that were tacked on might cost us. The important thing is that Barack Obama is the real deal. He is authentic and that is what the American people want and need.
